Opera, Premiered At The Los Angeles Opera, 2006

The libretto was written by Julie Taymor and J.D. McClatchy, after the novel “Grendel” by John Gardner and the poem “Beowulf”.

Grendel was also performed at the Lincoln Center Festival at the New York State Theater, 2006. Goldenthal was rewarded a Pulitzer-Prize Nomination in 2007 for this work.

Goldenthal's first opera, Grendel is a retelling of the epic tale of Beowulf told from the point of view of the monster Grendel.  The work, sung in both English and Old English, premiered June 8th 2006 at the Los Angeles Opera and at the Lincoln Center Festival July 11th 2006.
